There was a rise in the Red Deer Region’s unemployment rate last month, making it the highest rate among the province’s economic regions.

According to Statistics Canada, the Red Deer Region’s jobless rate was 6.2 per cent in November, up from 5.5 per cent in October but still lower than the 6.6 per cent unemployment rate during the same month last year.

The Red Deer Region’s unemployment rate, however, compares with a jobless rate of 5.6 per cent in Banff-Jasper-Rocky Mountain House and Athabasca-Grande Prairie-Peace River, 5.4 per cent in Calgary, 4.9 per cent in Edmonton, 4.5 per cent in Wood Buffalo-Cold Lake, 3.9 per cent in Camrose-Drumheller, and 2.9 per cent in Lethbridge-Medicine Hat.

Alberta’s unemployment rate was 5.8 per cent in November, up from 5.2 per cent in October, but still down from 7.6 per cent in November 2021.

The national jobless rate was 5.1 per cent last month, down from 5.2 per cent in October and 6.1 per cent during the same month last year.

Rob Roach, with ATB Financial, however, says the Alberta economy shed 15,100 jobs in November for a seasonally-adjusted drop of 0.6 per cent compared to October.

According to his report, full-time positions fell by 0.5 per cent (-10,000) while part-time jobs pulled back by 1.1 per cent (-5,100).

As a result, the provincial unemployment rate jumped from 5.2 per cent to 5.8 per cent.

Nationally, the number of jobs edged up slightly in November, growing by 0.1 per cent (+10,100) with gains in full-time employment (+0.3%), but losses in part-time work (-1.1%).

As noted earlier, the national unemployment rate also improved slightly, going from 5.2 per cent to 5.1 per cent.

Roach says employment was down in seven out of 10 provinces, with Quebec posting the largest increase at +0.6 per cent.
