Rebels win OT thriller in Calgary over Hitmen

Make that back-to-back wins for the Red Deer Rebels after a 3-2 overtime victory against the Hitmen in Calgary Sunday night.

The first period saw the Hitmen strike first when Zac Funk scored his eighth goal of the season, beating Rebels netminder Kyle Kelsey at 11:48, with Oliver Tulk and Keagan Slaney getting the assists to make it 1-0 Calgary.

The period would end with Calgary outshooting Red Deer 12-10 after 20 minutes.

The Rebels would tie it up 1-1 in the second period though when Hunter Mayo scored his ninth of the season at 6:26 on Hitmen goaltender Brayden Peters. Kalan Lind and Kai Uchacz assisted on the play.

Red Deer would go ahead 2-1 later in the period when Kalan Lind scored his sixth goal of the season at 18:18, on the power play from Jayden Grubbe and Christoffer Sedofff following a hooking penalty to Calgary’s Sean Tschigerl.

The second period ended with the Rebels outshooting the Hitmen 14-9 for a two period total of 24-21 in favour of Red Deer.

Calgary tied things up again 2-2 in the third period when Jacob Wright scored his fifth of the season at 7:24, with assists coming from Oliver Tulk and Zac Funk.

The period would end tied at two and the Hitmen outshooting the Rebels 16-7 for a three period total of 37-31 in favour of Calgary.

A tripping penalty to the Hitmen’s Maxim Muranov at 3:23 into the overtime period, however, would lead to Red Deer’s Hunter Mayo scoring the game winner just 28 seconds later.

The power play goal was his 10th goal of the season and came following assists from Kalan Lind and Christoffer Sedoff to make it a 3-2 overtime final.

The Rebels managed three shots on net compared to the Hitmen’s two in the extra frame for a game total of 39-34 in favour of Calgary.

Red Deer went 2/7 on the power play while Calgary went 0/3.

The Rebels Hunter Mayo, who scored two of the Rebels three goals, was named the game’s third star, while Calgary’s Zac Funk who was in on both Hitmen goals including one goal and one assist, was named the game’s second star. Kalan Lind, who was in on all three of Red Deer’s goals with one goal and two assists on the night, was named the game’s first star.

The Rebels next game is Friday, December 2, 2022, 7:00 p.m. at the Peavey Mart Centrium.
