The Taber Police Service is advising the public to be cautious as several large birds are roaming the community.

Sgt. Steve Meggison tells Lethbridge News Now that a member of the public saw the first of several ostriches around 2 a.m. on Thursday.

You can watch video of the event here.

Throughout the morning, reports of additional ostriches running around the town came in.

“I think we lost sight of them until, I believe, around eight o’clock this morning, maybe 8:30, when they started to create some traffic hazards just south of town. That’s when we got the call to go and help try to corral these things to try and get them off the highway,” says Meggison.

Taber-Vauxhall RCMP confirms that a total of 20 ostriches escaped from a local farm.

One of the birds was hit by a vehicle and killed.

As of 12:30 p.m., RCMP says all but a couple of the ostriches have been captured.

If you see one of the ostriches, Meggison advises to keep your distance and phone police.
