Stones and Bones event at the MAG

Nov 23, 2022 | 11:21 AM

Bring your collection of stones, bones and arrowheads to the Red Deer Museum + Art Gallery (MAG) on November 26 between 1-4pm for identification by Chris Jass, Paleontologist from the Royal Alberta Museum (RAM) and Kyle Forsythe, Archaeologist from the RAM.

Families can do a dig and create some fossilized fun art projects to take home. This FREE event is brought to you by the Archaeological Society of Alberta (ASA) Red Deer Centre in partnership with the Red Deer Museum + Art Gallery (MAG).

“We are excited to partner with the Archeological Society and offer this NEW opportunity for the community to inspire a love of archaeology,” says Lynn LeCorre, Education Coordinator at the Red Deer Museum + Art Gallery (MAG). “If you have unique finds in your personal collections, such as arrowheads, gems, rocks, bones, or fossils that you want identified, we will bring in experts from the RAM to you.”

This event will start with a blessing by Elder John Sinclair, followed by short remarks from the Archaeological Society of Alberta (Red Deer Centre).

Pick up a colouring sheet at the MAG or click here to print it (PDF). Colour it and bring it back to the museum on or before November 26 to be entered into a draw to win a mini Archaeology Kit! Colouring sheet courtesy of the Archaeological Society of Alberta – Lethbridge Centre.

“Families can learn about the role of archaeologists, by doing a fun digging activity in sand boxes. Prizes for our colouring contest and museum scavenger hunt will be awarded. Refreshments will also be provided. Join us for an informative and family fun day,” added LeCorre.
