This week in Red Deer Polytechnic Athletics

Nov 21, 2022 | 5:00 PM

It is the last week of competition within RDP Athletics for the fall semester and it is jam packed with incredible action whether it is at the Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre or somewhere else.

The volleyball teams will be in action with one of their division rivals, the Lethbridge College Kodiaks, for a back-to-back match on Friday and Saturday on their home court in Red Deer. These matches are definitely a must-see.

The Kings hockey team will have a two-game series against the Concordia University Thunder. Their first match will be at home at 7 pm before travelling to Edmonton the following day.

It will be a tough weekend for the Kings and Queens basketball teams. On top of being away from their home, they will have to face the Lethbridge College Kodiaks, which both teams out of Lethbridge are predicted to be in the top three of the Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) South Division.

Lastly, the curling teams will kick-off their 2022/2023 campaign this weekend in Airdrie with the Fall Regional Bonspiel.

Volleyball

Lethbridge College Kodiaks (5-2) at Queens (4-3)

• Friday, November 25 | 6 pm

• Saturday, November 26 | 1 pm

After a tough weekend up north for the Queens, this week does not get any better with a matchup that is going to be a divisional rival this year. They will be facing off against the Lethbridge College Kodiaks, who in history, the Queens usually take the win. But this year may be different with a very strong Kodiaks squad. They sit nicely in second place in the South Division and have taken the nationally ranked, undefeated Kings University to five sets.

Head Coach Talbot Walton says it will be a challenging opportunity for Queens Volleyball, but they are happy to be playing at home again.

“Lethbridge returns the majority of their starting line-up and has a couple of talented outside hitters. As the Queens continue to advance their overall play and work towards their standard, the opportunity to play home games versus a familiar Lethbridge team will be useful in evaluating the process. Finally, having two matches at home will be important for our well-being.”

The Queens will have two games at home with both against the Kodiaks. On Friday night, the match kicks off at 6 pm and it will be an afternoon game at 1 pm on Saturday. Expect a championship-like match.

Lethbridge College Kodiaks (6-1) at Kings (6-1)

• Friday, November 25 | 8 pm

• Saturday, November 26 | 3 pm

It will be an entertaining weekend on Friday and Saturday for Kings Volleyball as they will be battling it out for top place of the South Division. Both teams come into this weekend with a 6-1 record, but the Kodiaks have the upper hand as they come into Red Deer only losing four sets. The Kings have lost 10 as they have struggled to come out of the gate fast and let their opponents into the match.

Head Coach Aaron Schulha explains this is their biggest weekend of the semester.

“They are a talented group that is well-coached, so we are going to have to execute at a high level to get the results that we are looking for. We battled through some significant adversity this past weekend to earn two solid road victories against good teams. We did not have access to three of our starters, so I think that the team is in a good place mentally.”

The Kings will battle it out with the Kodiaks on Friday at 8 pm and Saturday at 3 pm. Come out and cheer on the Kings in what will be a championship-like game.

Hockey

Concordia University Thunder (5-4-0-1) vs Kings (7-2-1-0)

• Friday, November 25 | 7 pm at Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre

• Saturday, November 26 | 7 pm in Edmonton

Before the Kings hockey team can study for their exams and go off on their Christmas break, they will have to go through the gritty Concordia University Thunder this weekend in what will be a tough matchup for Red Deer. They come into this weekend with five wins, four losses and one tie, which places them in the middle of the pack. The Kings sit in second place, but it is a very tight conference with six points separating first and fifth place.

Head Coach Trevor Keeper says his team just needs to focus on Friday night’s game first and take it one day at a time.

“They play hard. They got some fast, speedy players. We must prepare like we did this last week and really focus on Friday night. These are our last two games before the Christmas break, so we must be prepared and play well in practice.”

The Kings will be at home on Friday night with a game at 7 pm and then will travel to Edmonton on Saturday for another 7 pm puck drop.

Basketball

Queens (3-5) at Lethbridge College Kodiaks (6-2)

• Friday, November 25 | 6 pm

• Saturday, November 26 | 1 pm

The Queens have two major aspects to prepare for this weekend. One, playing the Lethbridge College Kodiaks who sit atop of the South Division with a 6-2 record and lastly, the Queens will be on the road for both games, which is something they have only done three times this year. Red Deer is coming off a weekend where they struggled to put points on the board when they needed to and just could not make their shots. With the Kodiaks in fourth place in scoring in the whole conference, the Queens cannot afford these shooting troubles.

Head Coach Avery Harrison explains the Queens are a very defensive team, which has not been evident as of lately.

“I think our defence is very strong when we are at the top of our game. We got to finish off. We missed wide open layups and we can’t afford to miss these night after night, especially against a team who will pound the scoreboard with points.”

The Queens will be away in Lethbridge for their last two games. Both matches will be livestreamed on ACACTV. Friday night’s match will start at 6 pm and it will be an afternoon match at 1 pm on Saturday.

Kings (3-5) at Lethbridge College Kodiaks (8-0)

• Friday, November 25 | 8 pm

• Saturday, November 26 | 3 pm

The Kings basketball squad will have their hands full this weekend with an undefeated and nationally ranked Lethbridge College Kodiaks team. The Kodiaks sit in first place with an 8-0 record and the Kings are in fifth with a 3-5 record. Red Deer is coming off an impressive weekend even though they split their weekend games against the Keyano College Huskies and the Lakeland College Rustlers.

The Huskies were an undefeated team coming into Red Deer, but the Kings put up a fight against a very tough defensive team and came away with the most points for against the undefeated team so far this season.

On Saturday, an impressive fourth quarter by Eduardo Crespo and Bernardo Moller, who are both enrolled in the Academic Upgrading program, led the Kings to a 93-78 victory. These two will look to continue their offensive ways and lead their Kings to victory.

It is important to point out in pre-season the Kodiaks and Red Deer faced off where Lethbridge College would be victorious with a score of 78-69. Both games will be in Lethbridge, and you can livestream the matches on ACACTV. On Friday, the match will start at 8 pm and on Saturday, it will be a 3 pm start.

Kings and Queens Curling

(Fall Regional Bonspiel) November 25-27 hosted by SAIT in Airdrie

In their first bonspiel of the season, the Kings will be looking to kick-start their campaign at defending their gold medal from last year. For the Queens, they will be looking at improving on their silver medal finish at last season’s ACAC Championships.

Head Coach Brad Hamilton explained they will be looking at finishing the bonspiel with around a .500 or better record. He points out this will set the team’s up nicely for the Winter Regional Bonspiel and then hopefully the ACAC Championships. The Fall Regional will be hosted by SAIT in Airdrie from November 25 to 27.
