This week in Red Deer Polytechnic Athletics

Nov 14, 2022 | 2:02 PM

It’s back to another busy weekend for Red Deer Polytechnic Athletics with the end of the first half of the season nearing.

Officials note this will be the second last week of sports before the teams call it quits for the first semester and get ready for final exam season.

There are six games at home. Queens and Kings Basketball will welcome the Keyano College Huskies and the Lakeland College Rustlers. RDP and the Huskies will battle on November 18 before taking on the Rustlers on November 19.

The Queens Hockey squad will also welcome the Rustlers on November 18 before travelling out to Lloydminster for a rematch the following day.

It will be another tough matchup for the Kings Hockey team with a two-game series against the NAIT Ooks on the weekend. On Friday, they will be up in Edmonton but will be back in Red Deer on Saturday.

The Kings and Queens Volleyball teams will be away yet again. They have a massive road trip ahead of them. They will be in Fort McMurray to take on the Huskies on Friday before travelling down to Lloydminster for a match against the Rustlers on Saturday. This road trip is approximately 15 hours on the bus for both teams.

Basketball

Keyano College Huskies (5-1) vs Queens (3-3)

Friday, November 18 | 6 pm at Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre

Lakeland College Rustlers (2-4) vs Queens (3-3)

Saturday, November 19 | 6 pm at Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre

After a week where the Queens only saw one game, the women’s basketball team has a tough upcoming schedule this weekend. RDP will battle it out with the Huskies on Friday, who currently sit in third on the Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) rankings.

The following day they will take on the Lakeland College Rustlers, who were last year’s Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) Champions. At nationals at Vancouver Island University, the Rustlers would take home the bronze medal.

The Queens currently sit in fourth place with a 3-3 record. Both matches will start just after 6 pm at the Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre.

Keyano College Huskies (6-0) vs Kings (2-4)

Friday, November 18 | 8 pm at Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre

Lakeland College Rustlers (3-3) vs Kings (2-4)

Saturday, November 19 | 8 pm at Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre

After starting the season 0-4, the Kings have stormed back to win two straight games with their most recent win coming against The Kings University Eagles on Remembrance Day.

The Kings will also have a tough upcoming weekend as they play the Huskies on Friday and the Rustlers on Saturday, who both are nationally ranked. The Huskies are third and the Rustlers got last week’s 15th spot on the CCAA rankings.

Currently, the Kings are tied for fourth place with a 2-4 record. Both matches will start just after 8 pm.

Hockey

Lakeland College Rustlers (1-1-1) vs Queens (3-1)

• Friday, November 18 | 7 pm at Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre

• Saturday, November 19 | 7 pm in Lloydminster

The Queens are coming off a 3-0 shutout victory against the Olds College Broncos, who they swept last year at the ACAC Championships to win the gold.

RDP will play host to the Lakeland College Rustlers this Friday before travelling up north for a rematch. The Rustlers and the Queens played in the opening match of the 2022/2023 campaign where Red Deer walked away with a 3-1 victory over the new team to the ACAC.

Head Coach Kelly Coulter said the Rustlers win-loss record doesn’t do their team justice.

“To prepare for the Rustlers, we will review the game tape. They will play a fast game so we will have to do a good job of managing the puck and play a tight-checking game.”

RDP is sitting in second place in the division behind the NAIT Ooks, who are currently 4-0.

The Queens will be at the Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre on Friday with the puck dropping just after 7 pm. Tickets can be purchased online or at the ticket booth on game day.

NAIT Ooks (5-2-1) vs Kings (6-1-1)

• Friday, November 18 | 7 pm in Edmonton

• Saturday, November 19 | 7 pm at Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre

The Kings are coming off a bye week and will be looking forward to their two-game series against their division rivals, the NAIT Ooks. RDP is sitting in second place with a 6-1-1 record just behind the SAIT Trojans, who are 7-3 on the season.

Head Coach Trevor Keeper explained this bye week was perfectly placed in the season due to some injuries.

“This past week we created a series of team competitions in practice to have some fun and keep the competitive motor running. The bye week came at a good time as the Kings are recovering from a lot of little bumps and bruises, and some more serious injuries.”

Keeper added, the Ooks are one of the Kings biggest rivals over the past decade and they are a program who are deep in talent.

The Kings will be in Edmonton on Friday before a rematch with the Edmonton team on Saturday at 7 pm in their own barn.

Volleyball

Queens (4-1) vs Keyano College Huskies (4-2)

• Friday, November 18 | 6 pm in Fort McMurray

Queens (4-1) vs Lakeland College Rustlers (8-0)

• Saturday, November 19 | 6 pm in Lloydminster

The Queens Volleyball team is also coming off a bye weekend. Their last match-up was against the University of Alberta-Augustana Vikings, who were defeated 3-1 by the Red Deer women’s squad. They will have a long road trip this upcoming weekend to some very tough opponents: the Keyano College Huskies and the Lakeland College Rustlers.

Head Coach Talbot Walton said the trip up north then to Lloydminster is going to be challenging because they will be playing two consecutive nights with different opponents.

“We are training and preparing for the two opponents over the next 3-4 practices. Both teams present different challenges. We are going to have to rely on the basis of Queens Volleyball which are work hard, earn our points, and find a way to compete on each rally.”

The Huskies are not nationally ranked, but the Rustlers are in the second spot behind the Vancouver Island University Mariners. The Queens sit in 14th in the nation.

They will be out in Fort McMurray on Friday night before travelling to Lloydminster on Saturday. Both matches will be at 6 pm and will be livestreamed on ACACTV.

Kings (4-1) vs Keyano College Huskies (4-2)

• Friday, November 18 | 8 pm in Fort McMurray

Kings (4-1) vs Lakeland College Rustlers (3-5)

Saturday, November 19 | 8 pm in Lloydminster

Coming off a bye week, the Kings will be looking forward to their upcoming challenging matchups against the Keyano College Huskies and the Lakeland Rustlers.

Head Coach Aaron Schulha says this road trip against two tough North Division team’s will not be easy.

“We definitely need to come out of the gates faster than the last couple weekends, so lots to work on this week as we prepare. I think our serving can be a significant weapon when we are on our game, but it has not been near the level I want it to be.”

The Kings will play against the Huskies on Friday at 8 pm and then will have another late game on Saturday against the Rustlers in Lloydminster.

The Huskies are currently sitting in third in the North Division whereas the Rustlers are in fifth place.
