Saint-Lambert, QC, November 12, 2022 – It was a matchup between two champions: the Red Deer Polytechnic Queens out of Alberta and the Humber Hawks out of Ontario.

The Queens came into this fifth/sixth placement match after dropping their first one of the tournament, before winning their second and then would lose their third match of the Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Women’s Soccer Championships. This loss dropped them out of medal contention and would end up facing the Humber Hawks, who are the Ontario Colleges Athletic Association (OCAA) Champions, in the placement game.

The Hawks had a different path to this game against the Queens. The Hawks would win their first game, putting them in the gold medal semi-final where they would face-off and lose to the Saint-Lambert Cavaliers, the host team, in penalty kicks. This put them in the bronze medal semi-finals where they would lose yet another game in penalty kicks. But this time it was against the Vancouver Island University Mariners.

Coming into the championships in Quebec, the Hawks were placed fifth in the nation and the Queens were sitting in 12th .

It was not the start the Queens wanted coming into this match on a relatively misty day in Saint-Lambert, Quebec at Seaway Park 3. The Hawks had most of the possession in the first half and this pressure got to Red Deer near the end of the 45 minutes. Midfielder Erica Navarro (Bachelor of Science Nursing) would trip up one of the Hawks strikers in the 18-yard box, awarding the team out of Ontario a penalty kick. Secondyear Kaitlynn Russell stepped up to take it and would chip it into the top corner to take a late lead in the first half.

Coming into the tournament the Queens had never conceded the first goal of the match. This would be the third time out of their four games at the championships where they conceded the opening goal.

After defender Kayla Yeo would take a hard foul on the Hawks inside the centre circle, Humber was awarded a free kick in what was a very low chance to score but they found a way to capitalize on it to go up 2-0. Fourth-year Hayley Lewis would step up to take it and float it into the back of the net after the Queens goaltender Danyelle Bouvier (Bachelor of Science Nursing) misread the delivery of the kick. It would go over her head, off her gloves and into the net.

The Queens were given an opportunity to cut into the Hawks lead after a low-ball corner kick was swung in by All-Conference midfielder Sofia Quinteros (Bachelor of Science Psychology). But the Red Deer women inside the box could not corral the loose ball in what would have been an open net to shoot on.

Ultimately, the penalty kick in the first half would go as the winning goal as the Queens fall to the Hawks 2-0 and would finish in sixth place at the CCAA Women’s Soccer Championships.

The players of the game went to Sofia Quinteros of the Queens and Hawks captain Remi Pelletier. Quinteros played yet another outstanding 90 minutes in the midfield.

This capped off an impressive season where they went 11-1 in the Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) regular season and saw them break a couple of records like the ACAC Most Goals by a Team in a Single Season with 89 tallies on the year. It was an amazing season for the Queens Soccer program.

From Red Deer Polytechnic and the Athletics department, we just want to congratulate the team and the coaching staff on an incredible year. We wish them luck in their schooling this year and can’t wait for September 2023 when they can defend their ACAC Championship Title.

Congratulations Queens Soccer!
