Nov. 8: Crews actively working

Town of Ponoka Snow and Ice Control Update

Nov 8, 2022 | 4:24 PM

The Town of Ponoka says snow and ice control crews are actively clearing snow, as well as sanding and salting roadways throughout the community.

They say crews are also salting, sanding and clearing snow from sidewalks adjacent to Town-owned properties and on walking trails and park furniture (benches, picnic tables, etc.) in Town parks and throughout the trail system.

Watch for ‘No Parking Signs’

Starting Wednesday, the town says crews will be conducting snow removal operations along priority routes in the downtown area.

Residents are advised to watch for ‘no parking’ signs and move parked cars from roadways on which ‘no parking’ signage is posted.

Temporary parking bans will be implemented as ‘No Parking – Snow Removal’ signs are placed on roadways on Tuesday in advance of snow removal operations beginning Wednesday in the downtown area.

Motorists are also being asked to take an alternate route to avoid snow and ice control equipment where possible.

Online Service Requests

Motorists are being encouraged to slow down and drive for winter conditions. To report an icy intersection, back alley, or snow-covered sidewalk that may need attention, requests can be submitted online by visiting www.ponoka.ca. Scroll down and click on ‘File an Online Service Request,’ or call the Town Office at 403-783-4431 where Town staff can help fill out the online form.

Town winter operations crews work in conjunction with the Alberta Ministry of Transportation, which is responsible for snow and ice control on Highways 2A and 53 in Ponoka.

Clear Snow and Ice from Sidewalks Bordering Your Property

With the return of winter conditions, Ponoka citizens are also reminded to help keep the community safe by ensuring sidewalks that border their property are clear of snow and ice.

“By keeping the sidewalks adjacent to your property clear of snow and ice, you are protecting the safety and well-being of your neighbours and fellow citizens in Ponoka,” said town officials in a release.

When shovelling, residents are asked to avoid depositing snow and ice onto the roadway and properties other than their own. The town says that shovelling snow onto one’s own property is not only good for the grass when it melts in the spring, it is also a requirement under the Town of Ponoka Community Standards Bylaw #384-17.

Keeping sidewalks that border personal property clear of snow and ice is also a requirement under the Bylaw and can result in fines when necessary.
