A Ponoka man has been sentenced to eight years in jail and given a lifetime firearms prohibition for his part in a Wetaskiwin homicide.

Ryan Jake Applegarth, 30, was sentenced in Wetaskiwin Court of King’s Bench on Nov. 3, 2022, after being convicted of manslaughter.

It was on January 3, 2020, when RCMP responded to a complaint of a deceased 34-year-old man at a residence in Wetaskiwin.

A 27-year-old man was arrested and charged with first-degree murder in relation to the incident.

Applegarth, meantime, is also scheduled for trial in relation to the death of a woman in Ponoka.

He is scheduled for trial in Wetaskiwin Court of King’s Bench from May 1-5, 2023, in that matter.

It was on Nov. 5, 2020 when RCMP, along with EMS, responded to a 911 call for an injured female at a residential complex in Ponoka.

Chantelle Firingstoney, 26, a resident of Ponoka, was found deceased.

The Alberta RCMP Major Crimes Unit took over the investigation, and following an autopsy, determined the cause of death to be homicide.
