Red Deer Polytechnic Athletics weekend recap

It was a successful week inside Red Deer Polytechnic with only two losses on the weekend and one game being postponed due to travel conditions.

Volleyball

University of Alberta-Augustana Vikings (4-2) at Queens (3-1)

• Friday, November 4 | 6 pm at Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre

In their first matchup with a North Division team, the Queens were able to come away with a 3-1 set win over the Vikings. With 15 kills, two assists and two aces, outside-hitter Jaiden Ferguson (Business Administration General) was named the player of the match.

The Queens will have a bye week next week before travelling off to Fort McMurray on November 18.

University of Alberta-Augustana Vikings (0-6) at Kings (3-1)

• Friday, November 4 | 8 pm at Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre

The Kings followed their Queens with a win of their own against the Vikings but with a three-set sweep of the team from Camrose. Brett Lower (Bachelor of Science Nursing), last year’s ACAC South Rookie of the Year, was named player of the match for the Kings with an outstanding performance. He completed his night with 15 kills and three digs.

Maddux Greves (RDP Athletics)

They will also have a week of preparation and a bye before travelling to Keyano College in Fort McMurray and then to Lloydminster to take on the Lakeland Rustlers.

Hockey

Briercrest College Clippers (2-2) at Kings (4-1-1)

• Friday, November 4 | 7 pm

The Kings were able to grab some vengeance against the Clippers who knocked them out of last season’s ACAC playoffs. Red Deer was able to double up Briercrest College with a 6-3 victory.

The Kings got goals from Hayden Clayton, Nolan Doell, Ryland McNinch, Jacob Kendall and Jacob Wozney scored a pair. Doell (Bachelor of Education) was named the Kings player of the game with a goal and an assist.

• Saturday, November 5 | 1 pm

Red Deer Polytechnic continued their vengeance with a two-game series sweep of the Vikings. The Kings won 5-3 over the Clippers.

The Kings got three powerplay goals from Erik Miller, Hayden Clayton and Jacob Kendall. Holden Knights and Deegan Mofford scored a goal even strength. Kendall (Bachelor of Education Elementary) was named the player of the game for the Kings with a three-point (1G, 2A) performance.

NAIT Ooks (Edmonton) (2-0) vs Queens (2-0)

• Friday, November 5 | 7 pm at Edmonton

The Queens suffered their first loss of the season in their first major test in their 2022-2023 campaign. The Ooks defeated the Queens 4-1.

Red Deer’s only goal was thanks to a wrist shot from forward Avery Lajeunnesse (Bachelor of Education Elementary) who was also named player of the game. The Queens will battle with the Olds College Broncos in a rematch of last year’s ACAC Championship Series on Saturday, November 12.

Basketball

Queens (2-2) at University of Alberta-Augustana Vikings (3-1)

• Friday, November 5 | 6 pm at Camrose

The Queens were looking to make it three in a row, and it was looking pretty promising with the team leading for the first three quarters. They just could not finish it off and the Vikings would walk away with a 71-68 win.

Guard Sandra Garcia-Bernal (Educational Assistant) was named player of the game with 22 points and 11 rebounds.

They will take on The Kings University Eagles on Remembrance Day in Edmonton.

Kings (0-4) at University of Alberta-Augustana Vikings (2-2)

• Friday, November 5 | 8 pm at Camrose

The Kings were able to find their winning ways in Camrose with an 83-72 victory over the Vikings.

Red Deer Polytechnic was able to lead and control the pace of the game. Jose Mauro (Academic Upgrading) finished off his night in Central Alberta with 21 points and 10 rebounds. Cole Wicker also had an outstanding performance with 16 points and went four for seven in his three-pointing shooting.

They will battle the Eagles next week in Edmonton following the end of the Queens game.
