Rebels win 15th straight in comeback fashion

Nov 5, 2022 | 9:34 PM

The Red Deer Rebels are now 15-0 after defeating the Moose Jaw Warriors 4-2 on Saturday.

The win came a night after they topped Swift Current 4-1 to tie the franchise win-streak record and on this night, the Rebels were victorious in comeback fashion.

Over 15 wins in 15 games, the Rebels have scored 67 times, or 4.47 per game. They’ve allowed just 25, or 1.67 per game. They are the only undefeated team in the Canadian Hockey League.

Scoring on Saturday night one got started just 73 seconds in as Brayden Yager (7th) made it 1-0 for the home team.

Then, at 3:06 of the second period, Atley Calvert converted on the power play to make it 2-0 Warriors.

Kai Uchacz (14th) scored at 12:46 of the middle frame to cut the lead in half. Jhett Larson and Kalan Lind assisted.

The Rebels refused to stay down, and at 10:28 of the third, Jace Isley (8th) tied things up with his team shorthanded. Captain Jayden Grubbe assisted.

Just 3:02 later, Isley (9th) put the CHL’s hottest team ahead for the first time on the night, this time with helpers from Christoffer Sedoff and Craig Armstrong.

The Rebels iced it with an insurance goal from Uchacz (15th), who put it into the empty net at 19:06.

Between the pipes, Kyle Kelsey stopped 21 of 23 for his ninth win of the season.

Former Rebel Connor Ungar was in net for the loss for Moose Jaw, stopping 24 of 26 he faced.

Red Deer went 0/4 on the PP and Moose Jaw was 1/4.

THREE STARS

1st – Jace Isley

2nd – Brayden Yager

3rd – Kai Uchacz

Of note: When the Rebels won 14 straight in 2001-02, they lost that season in the WHL Final to the Kootenay Ice, the current iteration of which they’ll face this Tuesday and Wednesday in Winnipeg.

That’s right… up next for the Rebels is not one but two dates in the Manitoba capital, Tuesday and Wednesday, against the Ice in what will be their stiffest tests to date.

After Saturday, the Winnipeg Ice are 15-1-0-0 to Red Deer’s 15-0-0-0.

The broadcast each night will start at 5:55 Mountain Time on 106.7 REWIND Radio.
