Halloween safety reminders from Alberta RCMP

EDMONTON, AB – While Halloween is sure to be a frightful and spooky night, Alberta RCMP still wants to make sure it is safe.

The service is issuing safety reminders for parents, trick-or-treaters, and partiers.

Alberta RCMP Traffic Inspector Chris Romanchych says, “Every year, as expected, there is increased foot traffic out on our streets and sidewalks with people participating in different Halloween activities. Trick-or-treating or not, it is important that we be mindful of pedestrians and look out for each other on the roads.”

Some safety tips include:

  • Do not drive under the influence of drugs or alcohol
  • Stay alert and watch for pedestrians
  • Carry a flashlight when trick-or-treating
  • Wear a brightly-coloured costume or attach reflective material so motorists can easily see you
  • Ensure masks and hoods do not obstruct your vision
  • Use crosswalks and follow all traffic signals
  • Children should travel with parents, guardians, or in a trusted group
  • If you are pulling over in a neighbourhood or cul-de-sac, park in a legal spot and do not block driveways, crosswalks, or intersections
