Francophone settlement service in Red Deer hosting open house Oct. 27

Oct 25, 2022 | 2:40 PM

The Francophonie Albertaine au Plurielle — FRAP — has a new office in Red Deer.

The Edmonton-based organization, which provides settlement services primarily for Francophones, expanded to central Alberta last spring. Francophones come from many countries, including from Africa and the Caribbean, in addition to France and right here in Canada.

FRAP is hosting a community welcome open house from 5-7 p.m. on Oct. 27 at 5560 45 Street.

“We can help folks obtain their driver’s licence, sign up for daycare subsidies, complete immigration papers, help them register kids in school, and get health care in order,” says Sophie Simard, a settlement counsellor for FRAP.

“We can also enroll them in English classes, provide translator services, or even if they need furniture or clothing, we are there for them.”

Donations of gently used clothing at the upcoming event are greatly appreciated.

There will also be food at the event, which is free to attend, Simard notes.

“We don’t turn away anybody, even if they aren’t a Francophone,” she adds. “We work with people to help them feel secure, safe and comfortable in their new community. We don’t want people to fall through the cracks.”

FRAP’s website is being updated, but can be found at frap.ca. For more information, email inforeddeer@frap.ca.
