Broncos Soccer competing in ACAC South play-in games

Oct 25, 2022 | 12:15 PM

Though the weather has changed from sun to snow, the Olds College Broncos soccer teams aren’t ready to be done playing just yet.

College officials note that both the Broncos men’s and women’s soccer teams are competing in ACAC South play-in games at 3 p.m. on Oct. 25, 2022, with the women’s team traveling south to face the SAIT Trojans, while the men’s team heads north to play the Red Deer Polytechnic Kings. The winner of each match will compete at this weekend’s ACAC Soccer Championships, to be hosted by the Lethbridge College Kodiaks in Raymond, AB.

With the two teams sharing coaching staffs, head coach Allan Siwela will travel to Red Deer with the men’s soccer Broncos, while assistant coach Devin Simon will run the sideline in Calgary.

College officials say the women’s soccer Broncos will face an uphill challenge against the Trojans, who placed #15 in the final CCAA women’s soccer rankings of the season. The Trojans swept both ends of the season series, most recently handing the Broncos a 4-0 loss in Calgary on Oct. 16.

For the Broncos, Tiona Paton and her 16 goals (fourth in the ACAC) will receive the lion’s share of SAIT’s defensive attention, though Mirtalem Vriend (six goals) has proven to be an excellent running mate up front. On the other side of the ball, the Broncos will need to contain the duo of Harleen Kaur-Singh (11 goals) and Meaghan Wiebe (nine goals), though Grayce Herrera (six goals) is also said to be waiting in the wings.

Meanwhile, the men’s matchup is a rematch from this past Saturday, where the Broncos settled for a 3-3 draw with the Kings where a win would have brought the play-in game to Olds. The teams have been deadlocked throughout the season, having also played to a 1-1 draw in Olds on Oct. 1.

In this newest edition of the Battle of Central Alberta, Valentin Kirchner paces the Broncos with seven goals, though Red Deer’s Ajdin Sarcevic matched that output in the regular season. However, Diego Forno has found his form for Olds College in recent weeks, as he’s scored all five of his goals in the last five matches.

However, College officials say the Broncos’ game will be predicated on maintaining defensive responsibility, as their 10 goals conceded in the regular season represents the third-lowest mark in the ACAC.
