Red Deer Polytechnic Athletics weekend recap

It was a good week for RDP Athletics with four wins and four losses with soccer, hockey and basketball all on the go.

Volleyball and women’s hockey all had bye weeks. All official game recaps and more information on each one of these games can be found at rdpolytechathletics.ca within their respective sports page.

Basketball

Queens vs St. Mary’s Lightning

Friday, October 21 | 6 pm at Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre

The St. Mary’s Lightning would spoil the home opener of the Red Deer Polytechnic Queens Basketball team with a 57-48 victory. Veteran-guard Amy Szymanek was named player of the game for the Queens with a double-double of 11 rebounds and 11 points. The Lightning and the Queens will face-off again Monday night at 6 pm in Calgary. Janai Huberts, Sandra Garcia-Bernal, and Lauren France all finished with eight points in the loss.

Saturday, October 22 | 6 pm at St. Mary’s University (Calgary)

The Queens start their season on a two-game losing streak after falling to the Lightning 68-56 for the second night in a row. Veteran-guard Amy Szymanek would carry the team yet again on her way to back-to-back player of the game honour’s. She finished with 22 points and 13 rebounds in this game.

Kings vs St. Mary’s Lightning

Friday, October 21 | 8 pm at Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre

The Kings also had their home opener spoiled by the Lightning with a 105-78 victory in Red Deer. Guard Payton Baltzer took the team on his shoulders finishing with 18 points, four blocks and five assists. He was an all-around player for the Kings in the loss and was named player of the game. First-year post Jose Mauro Barrozo Junior would lead Red Deer in points with 23. Also, he finished off with 13 rebounds.

Saturday, October 22 | 8 pm at St. Mary’s University (Calgary)

The Kings start their season with two straight losses to the Lightning after falling 91-78 in Calgary on Saturday night. Rookie post Jose Mauro would be honoured with the player of the game for Red Deer after he finished with a double-double. Mauro had 21 points and 14 rebounds.

Hockey

Kings (1-1) vs SAIT Trojans (2-0)

Friday, October 21 | 7 pm at Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre

The Red Deer Polytechnic Kings hockey team would hand the Southern Alberta Institute of Technology (SAIT) Trojans their first loss of the season with a 4-2 victory. The Kings goals were scored by Chance Longjohn, Reegan Doig, Jacob Kendall and Erik Miller. However, the player of the game was handed to the Kings goalie Evan Fradette who finished with a 28 save performance.

Saturday, October 22 | 6:15 pm at Calgary

The Kings were able to grind out a 4-3 victory in Calgary against the SAIT Trojans. Jacob Kendall opened the scoring for the Kings and would later add another one with Sean Michalevich and Deegan Mofford each scoring a goal in the victory. Mofford was named player of the game for the Kings.

Soccer

Queens (10-1-0) vs Olds College Broncos (4-4-2)

Saturday, October 22 | 12 pm at Red Deer Polytechnic Soccer fields

The Queens had a dominant second half against the Olds College Broncos leading to a 5-0 shutout victory. Sein Furuyama finished with two goals which extends and ends her record at 29 goals in the season. Captain Alisha Coules, Corbynn Fujimoto and Kayla Yeo all had a goal in the winning effort. Player of the game went to Tristen Clubine.

Kings (4-1-4) vs Olds College Broncos (4-2-3)

Saturday, October 22 | 2 pm at Red Deer Polytechnic Soccer fields

The Kings had their work cut out for them against the Olds College Broncos. They went up 1-0 in the 8th minute with a goal by Jhojanner Amaris. But then gave up three straight goals to the Broncos. Looking like it was going to be a loss for the Kings, they stormed back with two goals of their own within eight minutes of each other. Arshdeep Singh and Kairdri Bornyi scored the goals in the second half. Eduardo Crespo finished off the game with three assists. Player of the game went to Amaris.
