Rebels blank Raiders for tenth consecutive victory

Oct 22, 2022 | 10:41 PM

The Red Deer Rebels have officially tied the third-longest win streak to start a season in WHL history.

On Saturday, Red Deer defeated the Prince Albert Raiders by a final score of 3-0 to notch their tenth consecutive victory.

The longest win streak to start a WHL season is 12 by the 1988-89 Swift Current Broncos.

The second longest is 11 by the 2021-22 Winnipeg Ice.

The third longest is now co-owned by the present-day Rebels, and the 1978-79 Brandon Wheat Kings who won 10, then tied one, and won 18 more before losing their 30th game, meaning they have the longest unbeaten streak to start a season.

On Saturday, it was all Rebels, all the time.

Jayden Grubbe (4th) got the home team on the board at 9:03 of the first, with Kalan Lind and Christoffer Sedoff assisting on the power play goal.

At 5:16 of the second, Jace Isley (5th) doubled the lead, once again on the PP, with Ollie Josephson and Frantisek Formanek assisting.

It was made 3-0 at 9:15 of the second when Jhett Larson (7th), for a third time with the man advantage, scored with helpers from Isley and Formanek.

Red Deer went 3/6 on the PP, while Prince Albert went 0/6, and Red Deer outshot the visitors 31-23.

In net, Red Deer’s Rhett Stoesser stopped all 23 pucks fired his way for his second win of the season and first shutout. The Carstairs native last started on Sept. 24 against Edmonton, and has a 1.50 GAA and .938 SV%.

THREE STARS

1st – Jace Isley (RD) – 1 goal, 1 assist

2nd – Rhett Stoesser (RD) – stopped all 23 shots faced

3rd – Jhett Larson – scored team leading (tied with Kai Uchacz) 7th goal

Over the Rebels 10-game win streak, they’ve outscored opponents 42-18, scoring the 5th most goals in the league, while allowing the fewest among all 22 teams.

They also have the 4th-best power play at 28.6 per cent, having scored a 2nd-best 14 power play goals.

On the penalty kill, Red Deer is 2nd-best by a hair at 91.1 per cent, behind Winnipeg at 91.3 per cent.

Up next for the Red Deer Rebels (10-0-0-0) is a home date against the Victoria Royals (2-8-2-0), on Wednesday, Oct. 26. Puck drop is at 7 p.m. with the broadcast LIVE on 106.7 REWIND Radio starting at 6:30.
