Artists to be paid $400-1,000

Call to artists for 2023 Cowboy Kicks charity project

Oct 21, 2022 | 1:00 PM

Artists are being called to paint aesthetically unique cowboy boots to auction for the 2023 Cowboy Kicks charity project.

Uniquely Western, arts meets west at this fundraising experience.

“The assignment is simple, yet unusual,” said Kathy Lacey, Cowboy Kicks Committee Chair. “The artist’s canvas to create their imaginative artwork is a fibreglass cowboy boot, which will then be sold off in an evening filled with entertainment and fun to raise funds for the Westerner Foundation, as well as a designated charity.”

After a few postponements due to the pandemic, the inaugural event took place on March 18, 2022, raising $375,000 for the Foundation and charity of choice Canadian Pro Rodeo Sport Medicine Team.

Various-sized fibreglass cowboy boots, hand-painted by Albertan artists, were auctioned off, while guests were provided with a western-style stand-up buffet and beverages alongside live performances by Canadian country music stars Brett Kissel and Trevor Panczak.

Major fundraiser underway in support of Westerner Foundation

Inaugural Cowboy Kicks event a huge success

For 2023, over 15 boots are available, in two boot sizes – large for over four feet high and small at roughly 1.5 feet high. Officials confirm artists selected will be paid $1,000 per large boot and $400 for each small boot.

“Not only is Cowboy Kicks a great way to support the Westerner Foundation, Cowboy Kicks is also a great way to support the arts community,” said Lacey.

Interested artists can submit their name, contact information, some examples of their artwork and a boot idea by the deadline of November 18, 2022, using the online form.

Officials say a selection committee will then go over the applications and choose the roster of artists for 2023. The boots will be ready by the end of December for painting and are to be finished and delivered to Westerner Park by early April, they state.

The Westerner Foundation was created in January 2021 with the objective of promoting, fundraising, and investing in initiatives to support the future sustainability of Westerner Park. In turn, the non-profit’s goal is to enhance the quality of life for Central Albertans, advance the agriculture industry, and generate economic benefit for the community.
