Red Deer Polytechnic Athletics weekend recap

It was quite an eventful weekend for Red Deer Polytechnic (RDP) Athletics with all sports participating in competition except for the basketball teams.

Here is the summary of the conference action last week:

Volleyball

Queens vs Briercrest Clippers | Friday, October 14 | 6 p.m. at Caronport, Saskatchewan

The RDP Queens volleyball team started their season off with 3-1 victory over the Briercrest Clippers. The Queens offense was led by outside-hitter Jaiden Ferguson who finished off the match with 11 kills and named player of the game.

The Queens would split their weekend with the Clippers after losing in five sets. Red Deer was up two sets to zero, but Briercrest stormed back taking the next three sets to win the match. Libero Frankie Santini was awarded the player of the game with 16 digs.

Kings vs Briercrest Clippers | Friday, October 14 | 8 p.m. at Caronport, Saskatchewan

The RDP Kings volleyball team served up a 3-1 victory over the Briercrest Clippers. The Kings exploded for 50 kills throughout the four sets. Left-handed outside-hitter Brett Lower was named player of the game with 15 kills. Newly added Colby Nemeth had a stellar performance in his Kings debut with 13 kills.

The Kings would end their weekend with a 3-0 loss to the Clippers and would be sent back to Alberta with a 1-1 record. Red Deer was able to get 30 kills in the match and veteran Maddux Greves stood out with 25 assists throughout the three sets. Outside-hitter Colby Nemeth was named the player of the game for the Kings after finishing the match with 12 kills, three aces and one block.

Hockey

Queens vs Lakeland College Rustlers | Friday, October 14 | 7 p.m. at Lloydminster

The RDP Queens opened their 2022/2023 season with a 3-1 victory over the Lakeland Rustlers. Avery Lajeunnesse, Alli Soyko and Haley Kicia would all get goals for the Queens. But it was Tanya Disotell-Dusnmore who was awarded the player of the game after stopping 25 out of 26 shots.

Kings vs University of Alberta-Augustana Vikings | Friday, October 14 | 7 p.m. at Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre

The RDP Kings hockey team exploded with six goals enroute to a 6-3 victory over the University of Alberta-Augustana Vikings. Dylan Esau, Jacob Wozney, Tanner Skalruk, Chase Haygarth, Hayden Clayton and Deegan Mofford each had a goal in the victory against the Vikings. Esau was named player of the game for the Kings.

The Kings would come up just short against the Vikings in the rematch, losing 4-3 in a very tight checking game. A total of 58 penalty minutes were handed out to both teams combined. Chance Longjohn, Hayden Clayton and Nolan Doell each scored in the loss. Doell was the Kings player of the game.

Soccer

Queens (8-1-0) vs Lethbridge College Kodiaks (6-3-1) | Saturday, October 15 | 2 p.m. at Comet Stadium in Raymond (2022/2023 ACAC Championships)

The RDP Queens soccer team continued their winning winning streak to nine consecutive games with a 3-2 win against the Lethbridge College Kodiaks. Sofia Quinteros, named player of the game, scored two and Jenica Swartz added another.

The Queens exploded for seven goals in their second last regular season game enroute to a 7-0 victory over the Medicine Hat Rattlers. Sein Furuyama would break the Most Goals in a Single ACAC Season record with her 26th and 27th goals. The Queens now have sole position of the most goals by a team in an ACAC season with 84 goals. Jenica Swartz was named the Queens player of the game.

Kings (3-1-3) vs Lethbridge College Kodiaks (3-3-3) | Saturday, October 15 | 4 p.m. at Comet Stadium in Raymond (2022/2023 ACAC Championships)

The RDP Kings Soccer team battled to a 2-2 draw against the Lethbridge College Kodiaks. It was a very tight match with both teams trading goals back and forth. The Kings got goals from Kaidri Bornyi and midfielder Ajdin Sarcevic who would be awarded the player of the game for Red Deer.

The Kings offense shined in a 4-1 victory against the Medicine Hat Rattlers. Cristobal Lisboa Tapia and Arsheep Singh each scored a goal, and Jaeden Swartz, named the player of the game, scored a pair in the Kings victory. Swartz was named player of the game.

Kings and Queens Cross Country

Saturday, October 15 at St. Mary’s University (Calgary)

It was deemed another successful weekend for the Red Deer Kings and Queens Cross-Country. The Kings would come away with a second-place finish overall. Daniel Szucs led the Kings team with a seventh-place finish with a time of 26:32. The Queens would take home the bronze at the race hosted by St. Mary’s University in Calgary. Justine Larson was the highest placed Queens runner with a time of 25:56 which gave her 13th spot in the 6km race.
