Rebels tie franchise record with season-starting 7th straight win

The Red Deer Rebels have equaled the franchise’s best ever start with a seventh straight win to start the 2022-23 WHL season.

On Saturday night, the team beat Swift Current 4-3 on the road.

They didn’t make it easy on themselves, spotting the Broncos a two-goal lead.

Caleb Wyrostok (1st) scored at 4:31 of the first period, followed by Josh Filmon (4th) at 6:14 on the power play.

The Rebels drew within one before the period was out, Jhett Larson (6th) scoring with assists to Ben King and Kalan Lind at 9:44.

In the second, Red Deer’s Ollie Josephson (1st) tied things up at 8:41, with helpers from Mats Lindgren ad Chris Sedoff.

It was locked at two goals apiece after 40 minutes.

In the third, Swift Current retook the lead at 7:20, Raphael Pelletier (3rd) putting it past Rebels netminder Kyle Kelsey.

But at 12:56, Red Deer would equalize once again, Matteo Fabrizi (1st) scoring with help once again from Lind and King.

Late in the contest, at 17:33 to be exact, Kai Uchacz (6th) scored the game winner, assists to Sedoff and Jayden Grubbe.

THREE STARS

1st: Ben King (RD) – 2 assists (5 points in two games since return)

2nd: Connor Hvidston (SC) – 2 assists

3rd: Kyle Kelsey – 28 saves on 30 shots faced, 2.00 GAA, .933 SV% (now 6-0 on the season – 1.83 GAA, .941 SV%)

Red Deer went 0/5 on the power play, while the Broncos were 1/4. Red Deer outshot Swift Current 34-30.

Seattle and Portland also won on Saturday, meaning they and Red Deer remain the three teams in the WHL who are still undefeated.

Up next for the Rebels is a home date and rematch against Calgary, on Wednesday, Oct. 19. Red Deer beat the Hitmen 3-2 in OT on Oct. 8.
