Undefeated Rebels playing with chip on their shoulder

Undefeated status typically has a finite lifespan, and the Red Deer Rebels know that, but it doesn’t mean they aren’t going full steam ahead to try and maintain it for as long as possible.

The Rebels recently came out of the gates with two wins on back to back nights against the defending WHL champion Edmonton Oil Kings to start the regular season.

They overcame the hype a few nights later, taking down the Regina Pats who boast the sensation who is the WHL’s leading scorer, Connor Bedard.

“We couldn’t really ask for more as far as our start. The team is gelling really well, and with a lot of practice this week for two games coming up, we are ready to continue this winning streak,” says Rebels blueliner Jace Weir.

“We know our opponents well going in, so it doesn’t matter if they have a big name,” says Kai Uchacz, referencing Bedard. “We don’t really let it affect our game. We go out and whoever we’re playing against, we take them the same way by sticking to our structure and playing hard every night.”

Next up for Red Deer is games three and four of a four-game homestand in which they’ll host Central Division rivals Lethbridge and Calgary

Uchacz, for his part, has three goals and one helper in three games.

“For our team, the mentality each day is getting better in practice,” the 19-year-old centre says. “Come game time, we need to be focused and dialled in. Each game, we’re looking for the win.”

“Obviously playing Edmonton, who knocked us out, we had a chip on our shoulder. With Regina having Bedard, we don’t read too much into that,” says Coldstream, B.C.’s Weir.

“The coaches have stressed that it does not matter who it is you’re playing, you’ve got to play your own game, and the same way every night. We can’t be satisfied after how things ended last season, so we want to improve and I’m confident we can do that.”

The Rebels get back at it on Fri., Oct. 7 against Lethbridge, and then Saturday against the Hitmen. Both nights, puck drop is at 7 p.m. with 106.7 REWIND Radio carrying the broadcast starting at 6:30.
