Potters Hands nears one-millionth meal served this Thanksgiving

Potters Hands Ministries will be serving a special dinner on Tuesday: a Thanksgiving meal for those less fortunate in Red Deer.

On October 11 from 4:30 – 5:45 p.m., board directors at the Christian based non-profit (4935 51 St.) will serve a traditional Thanksgiving dinner consisting of turkey, potatoes, cranberry sauce and more.

“We serve already on Tuesday and Thanksgiving is Monday and so [we] just [want] to make it a special meal for them,” said Barbara Giesbrecht, who has been managing the kitchen with her husband Helmut Giesbrecht since September 2022.

Serving predominantly the homeless, Barbara says she expects to see roughly 120 people on Tuesday, as the kitchen serves between 70 – 160 daily.

The organization serves breakfast from Monday to Saturday, lunch on Mondays and dinner every Tuesday.

“I think it’s close to 20 years [serving Thanksgiving dinner] and this October, at some point, we will be celebrating our one-millionth meal,” she said.

With the help of food banks and other donors, Barbara says she and Helmut became kitchen managers to spread awareness on the work of the organization and the need to help Red Deer’s vulnerable population.

“We want them [the recipients] to be thankful for what they get. We want them to thank the Lord for his provision. We want them to thank the people who are serving them for their service. We’d like to thank the donors; we thank them and we also want those eating to be thankful to them,” she said.

Potters Hands Ministries will also be serving their annual Christmas dinner in December.
