Central Alberta Film Festival returns for 6th year

The Central Alberta Film Festival (CAFF) is back, Oct. 19-22.

In its sixth year, CAFF will screen a variety of short and feature films at Carnival Cinemas, and then conclude with a formal awards black-tie gala at Westerner Park.

The festival has come to gain international respect, organizers say, with an increased number of entries from around the globe.

This benefits local filmmakers.

“They are legitimately competing with films world-wide and doing well,” says Heather Thiessen, Submissions Coordinator.

“Every year we have a wonderful turnout of skilled, creative, busy people from the film industry that volunteer their time as judges, including directors, producers, college and university teachers from the film and arts departments. It’s an honour working with them. We couldn’t have a festival without them.”

CAFF 2022 will feature the Canadian premiere of Undiagnosed, an American film nominated in the Best Feature Documentary category.

Undiagnosed, “brings forward remarkable cutting-edge science and compelling human drama to shine a light on a widespread but little-known issue devastating families across the world: undiagnosed illnesses.”

A Red Deer film competing against it is called Love of the Game, and is directed by Niek Theelen.

A synopsis notes that Love of the Game is, “about adaptive sports for people with disabilities in Alberta. Whether people play competitively or just for fun, they all come together with the same united passion and love of the game.”

Another in the Best Feature Doc category is OMA, by Calgary-based Numera Films.
