AJHL teams to undergo Leading Change training

Oct 5, 2022 | 2:46 PM

The Alberta Council of Women’s Shelters (ACWS) announced Wednesday that the Canadian Women’s Foundation will fund training sessions for the Alberta Junior Hockey League (AJHL).

The ACWS and AJHL recently announced a partnership whereby the league will participate in the ACWS’ Leading Change training.

All 16 AJHL teams will partake this season, including locally the Olds Grizzlys and Blackfalds Bulldogs.

According to a press release:

The Leading Change™ program focuses on building the conversation among players about domestic and gender-based violence prevention. The sessions will provide the young players with the tools they need to begin leading the change to end domestic violence and abuse and contribute to a larger culture change.

“We’re very pleased to be funding this important work,” said Ann Decter, Senior Director of Community Initiatives and Policy with the Canadian Women’s Foundation. “We know that women, girls, and Two Spirit, trans and non-binary people are at highest risk of experiencing gender-based violence, and we are committed to seeing those numbers drop. The training ACWS provides to athletic teams can spark vital culture change around sexual violence and sports.”

The ACWS says its hopes the young people receiving the messages the training offers will carry it forward in their lives.

Last month, AJHL Commisioner Ryan Bartoshyk said, “We believe that our players can use their position as role models and leaders in Alberta communities to contribute to positive change and promote anti-violence. The Alberta Council of Women’s Shelters will provide our young athletes with education on abuse prevention, consent and assist in identifying how they can model this leadership in their everyday lives.”

In 2020/21, Leading Change reached almost 6,000 individuals, including secondary and post-secondary students, lawyers, health care providers, elite athletes, sports fans, construction workers and safety professionals.

A release states further that the Canadian Women’s Foundation is a national leader in the movement for gender equality in Canada. Through funding, research, advocacy, and knowledge sharing, it is striving for systemic change for women, girls, and gender-diverse people to move out of violence, out of poverty, and into confidence and leadership.
