Red Deer County hosting cattle behaviour workshop

Sep 27, 2022 | 12:16 PM

Red Deer County will be hosting a workshop on Wednesday, October 5 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Benalto Rodeo Grounds. The workshop will focus on cattle behaviours and how farmers can use it to their advantage when handling them in a safe, calm efficient manner.

Specialists from across Alberta and the United States will be in attendance to speak at the event offering up tips and tricks to help farmers with one of the most powerful tools they can use for grazing management. Dylan Biggs, Dave Voth and Joe Engelhart will be present to discuss low-stress handling techniques; how this applies to grazing management around wetlands and sensitive areas and how external stresses like predation have an effect in their health.

“The County is bringing in very knowledgeable experts from Alberta and around North America to show our cattle producers about the benefits of cattle behaviour, these techniques may serve useful in their own operations” said Mayor Jim Wood.

According to agricultural manager, Cody McIntosh “by better understanding our cattle, we can help them trust in their farmers and respond in quick, meaningful ways to our directives. Time, commitment and effort are needed when working with cattle effectively – by only using your body position and movements.”
