Red Deer city council confirms four priorities for Family and Community Support Services funding

Red Deer city council has identified its four recommended priorities for the Red Deer & District Family and Community Support Services (FCSS) Board and its upcoming funding cycle.

As part of the consent agenda at Monday’s council meeting, their priorities are the following:

  • Community Connections
  • Mental Health
  • Children and Youth Development
  • Strong Family Connections

FCSS is an 80/20 funding partnership between the Government of Alberta and participating municipalities to support preventative social initiatives, projects and services to improve the social well-being of individuals and the community.

The City is one of six partner municipalities in the Red Deer & District FCSS program, with two members of council, currently Councillors Victor Doerksen and Michael Dawe, chosen as elected officials on the Board.

A workshop was conducted on September 20 with all council members to discuss seven potential funding priorities for the 2024-2026 funding cycle, including mental health, economic support, seniors health, diversity and inclusion, strong family cohesion, children and youth development, and community connections. Funding decisions for the three-year investment cycle are made in 2023.

The City states that even though some priorities were not selected, they could potentially be embedded into the chosen four to produce multiple outcomes.

“Having sat on FCSS for seven years, I saw up close and personal just how far even small amounts of funding can go to various regional initiatives and organizations,” said Councillor Vesna Higham.

“The Red Deer Regional, there’s six communities in total, is one of the strongest and one of the most cohesive, well organized, well-run boards across the province and they often receive accolades for the work that they do so I just wanted to put that plug in for the work that our local volunteers do in advancing this important preventative work for our region.”
