Football Alberta high school football rankings

Sep 26, 2022 | 1:36 PM

Football Alberta has announced its Weekly Top-10 Rankings for all four Tiers of 12-man high school football in the province and the 6-man rankings as well for the 2022 season.

These rankings will come out every Sunday until November 7. At that time, those will be the last rankings and teams will take that rank into Provincials.

Officials say the teams are slotted into Tiers based on their estimated school size over a three-year average by the Alberta Schools’ Athletic Association. Please note that games vs. US opponents, scrimmages, or tournaments are not taken into consideration for ranking or listed in the overall record of the schools.

GAME(S) OF THE WEEK:

Tier III

#5 Sturgeon Spirits at #6 St. Albert Skyhawks

6:00 p.m., Wednesday, September 28, Riel Park (St. Albert)

With leagues squeezing games in earlier in the week to leave Truth and Reconciliation Day alone on Friday, there are a few mid-week games of note, but none more interesting than the Tier III battle brewing in St. Albert. The Skyhawks used to have a standing reservation in Provincials out of the Metro Edmonton League at the Tier III level. That is, until the program at Sturgeon was formed in 2018. Within a year of their founding, the Spirits blasted past the Skyhawks into Provincials and have been the Metro Edmonton rep ever since (excluding the pandemic year of 2020).

Now, here we are with both programs up to speed post-pandemic, and undefeated to boot. This game will not determine who goes to Provincials as that will be decided through the Gilfillan Conference playoffs of the Metro league in late October.

But it will send a message to the rest of the province as to who is the king of the hill for now. Again, a warning there will be limited seating available in St. Albert with the phenomenon of large high school crowds continuing, we’d recommend getting their early for this one.
