Rebels prevail over Oil Kings in Saturday night rematch at the Centrium

Sep 24, 2022 | 9:54 PM

The Red Deer Rebels and Edmonton Oil Kings donโ€™t know how to not have a fun game against one another.

After Red Deer opened the season Friday with a 5-2 win in Edmonton, the two locked horns again Saturday at the Centrium.

The end result: a 5-3 win for Red Deer.

Scoring got started very early, Hunter Mayo (3rd) continuing his torrid pace to start the season, with Tanner Brown and Jhett Larson assisting for a quick power play marker at 1:25.

At 6:28 Frantisek Formanek (1st), with assists from Jace Isley and Kai Uchacz, doubled the Rebelsโ€™ lead.

Just 115 seconds later, Edmonton got on the board, Shea Van Olm (1st) beating Rhett Stoesser in his first start in net for Red Deer.

Late in the period, at 16:26, Logan Dowhaniuk (1st) evened things up at 2-2, and thatโ€™s how the eventful opening frame ended.

In the middle stanza, Jhett Larson (3rd) also added to his early hot streak, scoring just 1:58 in to restore the lead. Apples went to Ollie Josephson and Craig Armstrong.

The second period remained a one-goal affair until Oil King Rhett Melnyk tied it up at 18:37, and it was 3-3 after 40 minutes.

In the third, the teams traded penalties and in the first 10 minutes, but both goalies kept the puck at bay.

Then at 15:13, Kai Uchacz (1st) broke the deadlock, with Isley assisting to make it 4-3 late.

At 18:29, Edmonton pulled goalie Kolby Hay for the extra attacker, but it was Red Deer who would pounce, Carter Anderson (2nd) potting into the empty net for a 5-3 final, and a 2-0 start to the season for Red Deer.

Hay stopped 33 of 37 shots faced for Edmonton, while the Rebelsโ€™ Stoesser saved 22 of 25. Red Deer outshot Edmonton 38-25.

Red Deer was 1/3 on the PP, and Edmonton went 0/4.

The three stars were Jace Isley, Edmontonโ€™s Rhett Melnyk, and Jhett Larson.

Next up for the Rebels is the second of a four-game homestand, next Saturday against Regina. Puck drop is at 7 p.m. with the broadcast live on 106.7 REWIND Radio starting at 6:30.
