Rebels lose shootout thriller to close out winless pre-season

Sep 17, 2022 | 9:46 PM

The Red Deer Rebels closed out their four-game pre-season on Saturday night at the Centrium with a 5-4 shootout loss against Lethbridge.

Red Deer had gone winless in three exhibition games coming in, with two defeats against Calgary last weekend, and then in Lethbridge Friday night.

In this one, Red Deer got on the board early, Craig Armstrong (1st) scoring 62 seconds in. Kalan Lind got the lone assist, and it was 1-0 after 20 minutes.

In the middle frame, Noah Chadwick (1st) tied things up at 11:03. The goal came with the man advantage as Tanner Brown was serving two minutes for cross checking.

After 40 minutes, the score was tied 1-1.

Luck did not go Red Deer’s way to start the third.

Dustin Renas (1st) scored at 2:47 to make it 2-1 for the visitors, and then Tristan Zandee (3rd) extended the lead to 3-1 for Lethbridge at 7:34.

At 16:46, Quentin Bourne (1st) got the Rebels to within one, with Blake Gustafson and Ollie Josephson adding helpers.

But at 18:25, Cole Carrier (1st) regained the two-goal lead for the Canes.

Then at 18:53, Carter Anderson (1st) once again cut the lead to one, Gustafson and Kai Uchacz assisting.

Somehow, yes somehow, Red Deer would equalize with a 1.9 seconds left on the clock, Tanner Brown (1st) scoring with Uchacz and Larson assisting on the buzzer beater — and it was 4-4.

There was nothing doing in overtime, so the teams headed to a shootout.

Red Deer shot first, Talon Brigley failing to score.

Miguel Marques scored, giving Lethbridge the advantage.

Jhett Larson would score for Red Deer, but Noah Chadwick then put the puck past Kyle Kelsey to maintain the Canes’ lead.

Needing to score, Craig Armstrong could not, and the game ended in a 5-4 victory for Lethbridge.

In the Rebels net, Kyle Kelsey stopped 31 of 35 shots in the loss.

Brady Smith and Harrison Meneghin split the net for Lethbridge to earn the victory, stopping 15 shots each.

The regular season gets started for the Rebels on Friday, Sept. 23 with a 7 p.m. roadie in Edmonton against the Oil Kings at Rogers Place.

The two teams head back to Red Deer for a rematch the next night at the Centrium, also a 7 p.m. puck drop.
