City of Lacombe Mayor Grant Creasey says he received positive and constructive feedback during Coffee with Council on Wednesday.

On September 14, the Mayor was joined by four councillors and five senior administration staff in one of the over 40 booths set up at the Active Living Fair held by Lacombe Lifelong Learning at the Memorial Centre (5214 50 Ave.).

“Overall it was so nice to see people recognizing the work that has been done this year in the community and appreciating the quality and magnitude of the development that went on in Lacombe in the past, basically, two years through a time that has been challenging in our community,” he said.

“There was certainly some good direction on ways that we can improve but just for people to be cognizant of the things that are going on through a tough time in Alberta and appreciate how positive things are here, was probably the thing that sticks out for me.”

Mayor Creasey said residents stopped by the booth to discuss various topics, particularly road areas of concern. In preparation for budget deliberations this October, he said the event was a good opportunity to share with locals how this year’s additional one per cent tax was being allocated towards returning roadways to citizen standards.

Updates to the Downtown Area Redevelopment Plan (DARP) were also discussed, with forward-looking projects including infrastructure to make the area more pedestrian-friendly and accessible to all, the mayor says. The DARP Committee, who unveiled the “Heart of Lacombe” landmark earlier this month as one of their first projects, is also expected to present an updated list of projects this November, he states.

Coming up will be the grand opening of the Vesta Energy Fish & Fetch Park (between 53 Ave. and 34 St.) on September 29 at 11 a.m. The new dog park with agility equipment and added lighting are just some of the improvements that will be rolled out in a phased approach over the next few years, according to the mayor.

Finally, the mayor says “fine tuning” changes to the Community Standards Bylaw were presented, in relation to snow removal and commercial-related noise in early morning hours, among others. Residents also brought forward some inquiries including vehicle noise.

“Our goal is we want to try and craft those bylaws so that it takes care of as many citizens as we can and be reasonable in the process and keep it the great community to live in that it is,” he said.

However, the best part of the evening, he says, was the encouraging feedback among residents.

“Lacombe has seen the biggest growth in its history in the last two years and I think that speaks highly of the direction that was implemented by council as a whole and the way it has been implemented by our senior staff and carried out by all of the workers and certainly the front end staff that interact with the public on a day-to-day basis. It’s been a team effort,” he said.
