There’s still time to register for this Sunday’s Harvest Run

It’s not too late to register for the 30th anniversary of the Harvest Run in Red Deer this Sunday.

Since 1991, the run had been held religiously on the second Sunday of September, near harvesting season.

Over 200 runners have already registered for either the 3 km or 8 km run September 11 at 9 a.m., beginning and ending in Capstone (5589 47 Ave.).

While pre-pandemic times brought between 300-400 runners, Chair, Otto Stepanik says this year’s participation is similar to last year’s, and is expected to increase with each year.

Accepting walk-in registrations, he expects between 220-250 runners by race-day.

Participants can still sign up at race package pick-up locations on Saturday from 9 a.m. – 1 p.m. at sponsor Elite Chiropractic and Sports Medicine (#110-2085 Gaetz Ave.) and on Sunday in Capstone before the start of the race until 8:30 a.m.

Draw prizes will be available and cash prizes for the first three male and female racers. Funds will go towards a bursary for a young runner to pursue their athletic aspirations, which Stepanik says has already garnered one application by a 12-year-old student athlete.

Stepanik says households are particularly excited this year for the 3 km course, with one mother emailing him that she had been looking for a family-friendly race of this length.

“I’m excited about the race itself always and the people who come; they really have a good time always. We are running on a very nice trail system on Riverside and Bower Ponds,” he said. “It will be a great day and morning. People cheer for each other and friends and family come.”
