Queen Elizabeth II passes away peacefully in Scotland

Sep 8, 2022 | 11:42 AM

Queen Elizabeth II, the longest reigning British monarch and one of the longest reigning heads of state in history, has died at the age of 96.

Early Thursday morning, reports from Buckingham Palace indicated the Queen’s doctors were concerned for her health and placed her under medical supervision at Balmoral Castle in Scotland, a large estate house owned by the Royal Family.

Her immediate family cancelled all public appearances to fly to Scotland to be by her side.

“The Queen died peacefully at Balmoral this afternoon,” a statement from The Royal Family read. “The King and The Queen Consort will remain at Balmoral this evening and will return to London tomorrow.”

The monarch came into power in February 1952 at the age of 25, following the death of her father, King George VI.

She was married to Prince Philip, the Duke of Edinburgh for 73 years. Philip passed away in April 2021, two months shy of his 100 birthday.

The Queen’s reign lasted through 12 Canadian Prime Ministers including Justin Trudeau, 13 United States Presidents including Joe Biden, and 15 British Prime Ministers including the newly appointed Liz Truss.

The Queen made 22 official visits to Canada, with her last one being in 2010, where she visited Ontario and Manitoba, and toured the Canadian Museum of Nature with then Prime Minister Stephen Harper.

The last time she was in B.C. was in 2002, when she made stops in Victoria and Vancouver, where she took in an NHL exhibition game accompanied by Wayne Gretzky.

She visited Red Deer in 1990.

Her eldest son Prince Charles, the Prince of Whales and the heir apparent, is expected to assume her role as Head of State of the Monarchy.

Charles’ eldest son, Prince William will then be next in line, followed by William and Kate’s children George, Charlotte and Louis.
