Red Deer unofficially ties temperature record for August 31

A continued stretch of hot weather in Alberta brought many new temperature records throughout the province on Wednesday, including two central Alberta communities that tied temperature records.

According to Environment and Climate Change Canada, both Red Deer and Stettler tied temperature records for August 31.

In Red Deer, the thermometer unofficially reached 31.1 degrees Celsius on Wednesday, tying the existing record previously set in 1940. Records in this area have been kept since 1904.

In Stettler, the temperature was recorded at 33.3 degrees Celsius, tying the existing record also set in 1940. Records in this area have been kept since 1918.

Meanwhile, central Alberta communities that saw new temperature records unofficially broken included the Breton area which reached a new record high of 30.0 degree Celsius for August 31, breaking the old record of 28.9 degrees Celsius set in 1940. Records in this area have been kept since 1939.

Elsewhere, the Nordegg area reached a record high of 29.9 degrees Celsius for August 31, breaking the old record of 28.4 degrees Celsius set in 2009. Records in this area have been kept since 1915.

The Sundre area set a new record of 31.3 degrees Celsius for August 31, breaking the old record of 28.9 degrees Celsius set in 2009. Records in this area have been kept since 1993.

Also, the Three Hills area unofficially set a new temperature record of 33.7 degrees Celsius for August 31, breaking the old record of 32.8 degrees Celsius set in 1929. Records in this area have been kept since 1921.
