Danielle Smith faces renewed attacks in last UCP leadership debate

Aug 31, 2022 | 10:05 AM

The frontrunner candidate in the race to replace Jason Kenney as Alberta’s UCP leader was the focus of renewed attacks in the party’s final leadership debate.

Danielle Smith was criticized for her proposed Alberta sovereignty act and for leading a mass floor crossing to the Progressive Conservatives in late 2014 that nearly decimated her Wildrose party.

Former Kenney finance minister Travis Toews said the floor crossing undercut both parties and opened the door for the NDP win in 2015.

Smith was also criticized for her proposed Alberta sovereignty act, which would grant the province the right to ignore federal laws and court rulings.

Leela Aheer bluntly labelled the act “crap” and a backdoor plan for separation. Rebecca Schulz said it would threaten party unity.

Smith said it’s a bold position but said she’s open to consultation and modification.

Voting begins later this week and the winner will be announced Oct. 6.
