Sylvan Lake RCMP make arrests after security guard interrupts theft

Two people have been charged following the ramming of a security vehicle during the interruption of a theft in progress near Sylvan Lake last week.

On Aug. 25, 2022, at 11:15 p.m. Sylvan Lake RCMP received a report of a theft in progress at a construction site on Highway 11 and Range Road 15.

An employee with Tri-West Security is said to have observed two suspects on CCTV attempting to steal heavy machinery. Mounties say a security guard who attended the location was subsequently rammed by a suspect who was driving a stolen skid steer.

Police say two suspects then fled the scene in a stolen truck hauling a stolen trailer.

RCMP made patrols and located the stolen truck crashed in a field. RCMP with the assistance of an RCMP Police Dog were able to track and arrest two suspects in a wooded area. Both suspects received minor injuries during the incident and were taken to hospital where they were later released. Thankfully, the security guard was not injured, say Sylvan Lake Mounties.

A 22-year-old man from Sylvan Lake was charged with:

  • Theft of motor vehicle
  • Possession of property obtained by crime over $5000 (x2)
  • Mischief over $5000
  • Assault with a weapon
  • Fail to comply with release conditions

Mounties say the male suspect has been released from custody with his next court appearance set for September 16, 2022 at Red Deer provincial court.

Meanwhile, a 28-year-old woman from Wetaskiwin was charged with:

  • Possession of Property obtained by crime over $5000 (x3)
  • Mischief over $5000
  • Theft of a motor vehicle
  • Assault with a weapon
  • Fail to comply with release conditions

Police say the female suspect had been held in custody with her next court appearance set for September 6, 2022 at Red Deer provincial court.
