Fire destroys arbor at downtown Red Deer park

Aug 24, 2022 | 11:35 AM

No one was hurt, but a structure in downtown Red Deer was destroyed in an early morning fire on Wednesday.

Red Deer Emergency Services members arrived just after 5 a.m. to the Janet McLaren Cook Arbor, located just south of the southbound Gaetz Avenue bridge.

Ken Rosgen, Fire Safety Codes Officer, says when members arrived, the arbor — a wooden structure with benches underneath — was fully engulfed.

Rosgen shares that no one was injured, and that it’s believed the fire began in a garbage bin.

He says it’s too soon to deem it suspicious, however.

A statement from The City of Red Deer says:

“We will work with our insurance representatives to determine replacement costs with the intent to replace it with something similar. Until we we have more information, we can’t confirm replacement costs or timelines.”

The City adds that right now, its priority is to remove debris and hazards at the site.
