Innisfail residents invited to session on potential waste-to-energy project

Aug 19, 2022 | 4:31 PM

The Town of Innisfail is set to host a presentation about a potential waste-to-energy facility being proposed.

Varme Energy, which the Town says is a leading developer in waste to energy and bioenergy projects in Canada, recently provided details to town council about a proposed facility.

Now, the regional community is invited to learn all about it during a session on Thursday, Aug. 25 running from 5-7 p.m. at the Innisfail Library & Learning Centre.

“In June of this year, our council signed a letter of intent and expressed interest in learning more about the process of establishing a waste-to-energy facility in Innisfail,” said Meghan Jenkins, the Town’s Director of Community Services.“ This presentation is the next step in that process. It’s an opportunity for the company to educate us about how the facility functions, and it’s also our opportunity to ask any questions we may have.”

According to the Town, the waste-to-energy process involves incinerating waste — including the solid household waste collected by most municipalities — and converting it to electricity. The technology used to achieve this is already in use in other jurisdictions in Europe.

Varme’s website says it is backed and majority-owned by Green Transition Holding, a Norwegian company, and claims to be the first company of its kind in Canada.

It has three projects “coming soon” in Alberta, including what it’s calling the Alberta Industrial Heartland Project, another in Edmonton, and one in Innisfail.

There is no registration required to attend the Aug. 25 event.
