City council to discuss 12 potential shelter sites in closed meeting

Aug 13, 2022 | 11:31 AM

Red Deer city council will be presented with a list of potential shelter sites at its meeting this Monday, Aug. 15.

The shelter site saga has been ongoing for years now, but fortunately with the help of a commercial realtor, The City shares, there is some light at the end of the tunnel with a new list of possible sites having been crafted.

Thanks also to the help of other community partners and citizens, 96 sites were identified and assessed based on city council’s Site Evaluation Matrix approved back on July 4.

Of the 96 sites:

  • 50 were market sites recommended by commercial realtor
  • Five were unlisted sites recommended by commercial realtor
  • 13 were City or Provincially owned land
  • 22 were publicly recommended sites from May to July
  • Six were sites put forward during the public call for sites from July 20 to 27

Just twelve of the sites scored 70 per cent or higher using the matrix, The City says, and those will be the ones presented to council.

However, that will be done during a closed meeting, with the information not being shared publicly in order to “protect the economic interest of potential parties (including site owners) involved,” The City says in a release.

On Monday, council will also determine their next steps in the process of selecting a site to recommend to the province, which will include their own site assessment based on their Site Evaluation Matrix.

The current target date for council to select a site to recommend to the province is August 29, however, if additional technical information is required on the current 12 sites, or additional sites identified by council, that target date may be pushed out by a minimum of two weeks.

The public portion of the report can be viewed in pages 102-111 of Monday’s council agenda.
