Team Alberta off to positive start at 2022 Niagara Canada Summer Games

Alberta is already adding medals after their first two days at the 2022 Niagara Canada Summer Games.

The multi-sport event for amateur athletes is the summer season portion of the Canada Games and runs this year from August 6 – 21.

On Sunday, August 7, Breanna White from Sherwood Park, not only made her debut at the Games, but was the first athlete from Team Alberta to medal on the competition’s first day, finishing with silver in the Women’s freestyle para event.

Reid Maxwell, from St. Albert, followed with a second podium for Team Alberta, bringing home the gold in the men’s freestyle para event.

Following the para swimming individual athlete events, both of Alberta’s men’s and women’s 4x200m swim teams headed into the pool to haul two more podiums for the province.

The women’s team swimmers Maxine Clark (Calgary), Abbi Bahler (Sylvan Lake), Dakota Howard (Spruce Grove) and Milena Cosicand (Calgary) finished in third place right behind British Columbia, and Team Ontario, respectively.

The men’s relay swimmers Nicholas Duncan (Calgary), Torren Vandersteen (Beaumont), Cooper Waddel (Red Deer) and Addison Butler (Irricana) completed the podium colours for the day by sweeping another bronze medal for team Alberta, right behind British Columbia for silver, and Team Ontario for gold.

Other highlights from the day include:

  • Team Alberta Women’s Softball win’s 5 – 1 against Quebec, and finishing the day with another victory against Newfoundland and Labrador with a score of 15-0 at the Southward Community Park.
  • Team Alberta’s Baseball team strikes a win with PEI today with a score of 8 -3 point lead at the Oakes Park.
  • Team Alberta sweeps the first Female Box Lacrosse game with a score of 11 – 2 vs. Team Nova Scotia at Canada Games Park.
  • Team Alberta’s Tennis event falls short against Ontario with a score of 2 – 4 at the Niagara Tennis Club Swimming at Brock – Eleanor Misener
  • Team Alberta’s Men’s Soccer kicks off their first game vs. Nova Scotia finishing with a tie 0 – 0 at the Youngs Sportsplex
  • Team Alberta’s Softball Female wins against Quebec 5 – 1 and then continues their winning streak against Newfoundland and Labrador 15 – 0 at the southward Community Park

On Monday, August 8, Sophia Howell from Airdrie won bronze for the Triathlon Sprint Female, adding a fifth medal for Team Alberta, placing them in third place in the medal standings, behind Quebec and Ontario tied for second and British Columbia in first.

At the last Canada Summer Games in 2017, Alberta won 98 medals with 26 of them gold, 38 silver, and 34 bronze.
