Canada Summer Games Day 2: Didsbury swimmer wins bronze

Another local athlete has won a medal at the Canada Summer Games in Niagara.

Swimmer Wesley Wilks of Didsbury earned bronze in the 50 metre Speacial Olympics breaststroke, one of nine medals for Team Alberta on day two of the event. Wilks also finished 4th in the 100 metre freestyle

Colby Nemeth of Red Deer also won his beach volleyball match against New Brunswick 2-0, alongside Calgary teammate Jacob Van Geel to start the team’s tournament off well.

In men’s baseball, Alberta beat Newfoundland 17-7 with help from the likes of Innisfail’s Nathan Flewelling, Sylvan Lake’s Gavin Galenza, Red Deer’s Matthew Murray and Olds’ Jaxon Zanolli.

In women’s softball, Alberta beat New Brunswick 5-1, with players such as Innisfail’s Darby DeRuyter, Rimbey’s Torrence Clelland, Olds’ Rayna Cruickshanks and Gracie Hodgson, Clive’s Katelyn Jeglum, and Red Deer County’s Paige Simpson.

Team Alberta Highlights on Day 3 included:

  • Gold Medal: 5 golds for Team Alberta today (swimming): 50m Breaststroke Special Olympics male: Connor Bissett (Edmonton), 100m Freestyle Female: Maxine Clark (Calgary), 100m Freestyle Para male: Reid Maxwell (St.Albert), 100m Freestyle Special Olympics male: Connor Bisset (Edmonton), 4x100m Medley mixed Dakota Howard, (Spruce Grove), Jett Verjee (Calgary), Nick Duncan (Calgary), Maxine Clark (Calgary)
  • Silver Medal: Swimming 50m breaststroke female: Kate Graboski (Calgary), 100m Freestyle Para Female: Breanna White (Sherwood Park)
  • Bronze Medal: 50m Breaststroke Special Olympics male: Wesley Wilks (Didsbury), Triathlon Female: Sophia Howell (Airdrie)

Through two days, Alberta has six gold, three silver and four bronze medals (13 total), third overall behind Ontario with 14 and B.C. with 15.
