Lacombe golfer Brady Mckinlay has wrapped up competition at the Canadian Men’s Amateur Championship at the Point Grey Golf and Country Club in Vancouver, B.C. this week.

Mckinlay finished tied for 27th place after shooting 72s in the first two rounds of the four-round competition, then a 70 and 71 respectively, to finish +1 and round-out the event, for a total of 285.

Other central Alberta golfers who took part but were unable to make the cut after two rounds, included Carter Graf of Sylvan Lake who shot a 78 and 72 for a total of 150 (+8), Logan Graf of Sylvan Lake who shot a 79 an 73 for a total of 152 (+10), Tom Jr. Mckinlay from Lacombe who shot a 75 and 82 for a total of 157 (+15), Chase Broderson from Lacombe who shot a 76 and 81 for a total of 157 (+15), Cole Bergheim of Red Deer who shot an 80 and 77 for a total of 157 (+15), and Alex Gerrard from Red Deer County who shot a 77 and 91 for a total of 168 (+26).

The tournament winner was Luis Carrera of Mexico City who shot a 73, 68, 67, and 66 for a total of 274 (-10) and purse winnings of $1,200.

With the win, Carrera becomes only the second Mexican golfer and first since Rafael Alarcon in 1979 to take home the title.

Along with the title, Carrera has earned an exemption into the 2023 RBC Canadian Open at Oakdale Golf & Country Club, as well as the 2022 U.S. Amateur Championship being contested August 15-22 in Paramus, N.J. This was his first time competing in the Canadian Men’s Amateur Championship, presented by BDO.

Team Québec charged ahead to win the inter-provincial competition in a seven-stroke victory over the host squad, Team British Columbia. Laurent Desmarchais, Christopher Vandette, and William Forgues shot a collective 3-under to become the ninth team from Québec to secure the title since the Willingdon Cup became an annual competition in 1927. Reigning champions Team Ontario rounded out the top-3 at 6 over par.
