Red Deer swimmer Rebecca Smith earns medals with national teammates

Local swimmer Rebecca Smith and her team have already scored a few medals for Team Canada at the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, England.

The international multi-sport event is held every four years among the Commonwealth of Nations, with this year’s taking place from July 28 – August 8.

With her team, Smith won bronze for the Mixed 4x100m Freestyle Relay on July 29 with a time of 3:24.86. Smith was third in line, finishing her first 50m with a time of 35.90 and her second half in 28.51 seconds for a total time of 54.41.

The next day on July 30, Team Canada won bronze again for the Women’s 4x100m Freestyle Relay with a time of 3:37.25. Smith was third again for the team, her first 50m completed in 26.24 and her second 50m in 28.84 for a total of 55.08.

Finally, on August 2, the team achieved a silver medal in Mixed 4x100m Medley Relay – Heat 3 with a final time of 3:51.43. Smith, the fourth to swim for the team, had a time of 26.43 for the first 50m and 28.89 for the last, totalling 55.32.

Competing solo, the Olympic swimmer from Red Deer and student at the University of Calgary had her first aquatics competition of the Games on July 29 for the Women’s 100m Butterfly where she earned second place in the Heat 3 schedule with a time of 58.89. Competing in Semi-Final 1 later that day, she ranked third with a time of 58.59 before finishing eighth on July 30 in the Finals with a time of 59.54.

For the Women’s 100m Freestyle – Heat 8, she once again started strong finishing second on August 1 at 55.32. The Semi-Final 2 that same day pushed her in fourth at 55.03. The finals on August 2 gave her seventh place at 55.09. Her teammate Katherine Savard earned eighth place with a time of 55.22.
