Leprechaun Joe continues efforts for granting wishes

Red Deer’s most well-known fundraiser for the Make-A-Wish Foundation has once again announced another major donation to his fundraising campaign.

Joe Hittel, aka ‘Leprechaun Joe’, received a $1,500 cheque from Mr. Motors in Red Deer last week, adding to the over $143,000 Hittel has raised for the charitable organization since 2018 when he first began his fundraising efforts.

Hittel says he raised $14,000 during his first year of helping the Make-A-Wish Foundation in 2018, $50,000 in his second year, $63,000 his third, and $40,000 last year in 2021. So far this year, he’s now raised over $21,000.

“I’ve rappelled down the Stantec Building three times in Red Deer, and then last year we had to go to Edmonton for the last rappelle at Coast Plaza which is another 10 stories higher than the Stantec,” he explains. “The higher the building, the more time I have to relax coming down.”

With many wishes coming in at roughly $10,000 per wish, the 87-year-old says his work needs to continue.

“I have posters around town, at Chillabongs, I’m going around to businesses and collecting money from that, and I have some good donors,” says Hittel, noting support from Mr. Motors for example, which has been in the thousands over the past couple of years.

Greyson Averill, owner of Mr. Motors, encourages other local businesses to consider supporting Leprechaun Joe in his efforts to help grant wishes for children with critical illnesses.

“Give what you can. A little bit is better than nothing. We never know when we need these services,” says Averill.
