Fire destroys motor home and garage in Riverside Meadows

A fire early Tuesday morning in Red Deer’s Riverside Meadows neighbourhood completely destroyed a motor home and garage.

Curtis Schaefer, Assistant Deputy Chief for the City’s Emergency Services, confirmed a call came in at around 12:40 a.m. on July 26 for a back alley smoke investigation, which was quickly upgraded to a structure fire, for a home located on the corner of 59 St. and 60 Ave.

He states that one engine reported on scene to find a detached garage and motor home, sitting outside beside it, were “fully engulfed” in flames.

A total of 15 crew members, including three fire engines, one ladder, a command officer and an ambulance, contained the fire in about 20 minutes, he says. As the fire was easy to access, Schaefer states crews left the scene around 3:00 a.m.

Although the residents of the home were temporarily evacuated, he says they were able to return as no fire or smoke damage was found to the home or neighboring properties.

The damage estimate is still unknown; however, Schaefer confirms the motor home and garage were deemed as write-offs.

No injuries were reported.

While the cause of the fire is still under investigation, Schaefer says it is believed to have begun in the motor home.
