Tens of thousands enjoying Westerner Days 2022

Jul 24, 2022 | 1:13 PM

With blue, sunny skies, attendance for the Westerner Days Fair & Exposition is off to a great start for central Alberta’s Largest Summer Celebration.

That according to Westerner Park officials who say tens of thousands have already come through the gates to Westerner Days 2022.

“As ‘Westerners’, we thrive on seeing such a tremendous response from the community, and being able to bring people together again to celebrate at Westerner Days,” says Mike Olesen, CEO of Westerner Park. “It’s also a huge boost for Red Deer and area, employing hundreds of full and part-time individuals, contractors, and local businesses. Westerner Days success is also due in large part to our sponsors and volunteers, who have already contributed over 600 hours of their time and expertise to Westerner Days.”

A highlight of Thursday was the Billy Talent performance on the TD Main Stage. The rockers did not disappoint, say Westerner officials, delivering an incredible show to over 2,500 fans. Friday night saw Corb Lund and the Hurtin’ Albertans reconnecting with central Albertans through his authentic western themes. Alan Doyle, sponsored by 106.7 Rewind, provided the final performance on the TD Main Stage Saturday night.

Free with admission, crowds have been taking in the new outdoor Budweiser Beer Gardens, featuring live music twice daily, say Westerner Park officials. Kicking off Wednesday was Kate Stevens and Sweet Barry, then Drew Gregory Thursday and The Static Shift on Friday. All sponsored by Big 105.5 and 106.7 Rewind. FKB also performed on Saturday. Expected to draw quite a crowd of fans, Stereos, will wrap up at 5pm Sunday at the festival-style stage.

This weekend, fair-goers can expect to enjoy all of the free entertainment and activities included with admission, such as the Canine Stars, Welcome to the Jungle Reptile Show, Twisted Steel blacksmithing demonstrations at the Discover Ag exhibit, and Pow wow aboriginal dancers at the Servus International Pavilion, to name a few.

Sponsored by Nova Chemicals, in support of Ronald McDonald House Charities, this is described as a great day for family savings. A carload of up to six people is only $30 for admission and kids 12 and under can get an unlimited ride wristband on the midway for just $15.00. Ronald McDonald House will also be providing special treats, face-painting, and activities at the Kids Corral to celebrate their 10 year anniversary of the Red Deer House.

Always a fan favourite, the North American Pony Chuckwagon Championships run each night at 5pm, and these drivers and ponies know how to entertain.

Fans also won’t want to miss the final Dash For Cash at 1pm Sunday, with the winner taking home the $2,500 prize sponsored by Marshall Construction.
