Bergen tornado given EF2 rating with winds up to 190 km/h

Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) now says a tornado in central Alberta last week was an EF2 on the Enhanced Fujita (EF) Scale.

The strongest a tornado can be rated on the EF Scale is EF5.

This tornado, as previously reported, occurred around 2:30 p.m. on July 7 near Bergen, about 10 kilometres south of Sundre.

ECCC also now says the estimated wind speed of the tornado was 180 to 190 km/h.

As previously reported, it also damaged five homes, including one that was levelled. There were no deaths.

Hail the size of ping-pong balls fell, and there were other reports of funnel clouds.

The storm later moved towards Red Deer, causing a tornado watch to be issued for many parts of central Alberta — while the Sundre area was under a tornado warning.

Areas north of Sundre mainly experienced rain, hail and wind, but no further tornadoes.
