Tornado damages at least five homes, levels one near Sundre on Thursday

At least five homes were significantly damaged on Thursday due to a tornado that touched down in the Sundre area.

RCMP tell rdnewsNOW one of the five homes was levelled, adding that there were no fatalities, and only minor injuries. Most or all of them were in the area of Township Road 320 and Range Roads 44 & 45, about five minutes east of Bergen, police say.

According to Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC):

“ECCC received the first report of a funnel cloud/tornado near Bergen around 2:32 PM MDT and the last report near Shantz around 3:10 PM MDT, as the thunderstorm moved to the east.”

Bergen, which is 10 km south of Sundre, is 121 km southwest of Red Deer.

ECCC adds that many trees were uprooted.

At this time, an Enhanced Fujita (EF) rating has not been determined for the tornado, with ECCC seeking more photos and video from the public. Those can be submitted to abstorm@ec.gc.ca, or tweeted using #abstorm. You can also call 1-800-239-0484.

Another tornado was said to have been spotted near Cochrane closer to 4 p.m. on Thursday, but ECCC has not confirmed that as of yet.

Thursday’s tornadic action followed up similar weather on Tuesday, July 5 when three tornadoes are now confirmed to have made landfall.

At approximately 4:44 p.m., a tornado was observed near Consort,
AB — 222 km east of Red Deer

At approximately 4:44 p.m., a tornado was observed near Neutral
Hills, AB — 207 km east of Red Deer
