No Offence Committed

Investigation into officer-involved shooting at Maskwacis concluded

An investigation into an officer-involved shooting that injured two people in Maskwacis nearly four years ago has determined no reasonable grounds to believe the officer involved committed any offence.

According to Matthew Block, Assistant Executive Director, Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT), the subject officer was faced with a situation where he was being shot at and was forced to respond with force likely to cause grievous bodily harm or death for self-preservation.

“While it is regrettable that AP1 (Affected Person 1) and AP2 (Affected Person 2) were injured, it was AP1’s actions that led to the need for the SO (Subject Officer) to return fire,” explained Block in his report. “AP2 being shot was an unfortunate result of the exchange of gunfire between AP1 and the SO and AP2’s proximity to it, and was not caused by any improper action by the SO.”

On Oct. 20, 2018, ASIRT was directed to investigate an officer-involved shooting involving an officer of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police that occurred in Maskwacis earlier that day. One officer discharged his service weapon and two males were shot.
