Sundre man to face trial next February for allegedly killing man with pick-up truck

Jun 22, 2022 | 2:09 PM

A Sundre man accused of backing up his pick-up truck into another man, and killing him, will go to trial next February.

Jason Kelly Burns, now 30, is charged with dangerous operation of a motor vehicle causing death, fail to remain at the scene of a collision causing death, and driving while prohibited, stemming from an incident in March 2022 at a rural home in Mountain View County.

Investigation by police determined that on March 1, at about noon, an interaction occurred between two adult males at the residence on Range Road 43, resulting in the suspect striking the victim with a pick-up truck while operating it in reverse.

The pick-up was said to have fled the scene.

The victim, 34-year-old Brendan McDonald, of Sundre, was declared deceased on scene.

The suspect and the truck were located a short time later at a home in Sundre, and the suspect arrested without incident.

Burns, who first appeared in court in Okotoks, had his case moved to Didsbury, and it is now taking place in Calgary.

His trial is set to happen from Feb. 13-17, 2023.
