Jun 7, 2022 | 1:28 PM

The Red Deer River Naturalists (RDRN) is hosting a weekend hiking trip this June to discover the Battle River Valley.

Titled the “Battle River Field trip”, the two day expedition is scheduled to begin on Saturday, June 25 until Sunday, June 26.

The trip will involve a three-hour easy to medium hike through the Battle River Hills each day, and a stop at the old homestead of the Bjorge’s Farm to check for Turkey Vultures. Besides the vultures, some of the highlights of the trip might be Brown Thrashers, Great Horned Owls, Mountain Bluebirds, Cliff Swallows, and White-faced Ibis.

On the Saturday, participants will meet at the Ferry Point Campground on Range Rd 184 north of Twp Rd 434 near Meeting Creek in Rosalind, Alberta on June 25 at 10 a.m.

Participants are asked to bring their own lunch and drinks. Avril Magenson will then be giving a talk about native stone tool making.

At night, there will be a potluck supper where each participant will bring an item to share. Those wanting to stay overnight can camp in tents or trailers at the Ferry Point Campground, at a minimal campsite charge, south of the Battle River bridge on Range Road 184.

Sunday will begin again at 10 a.m. with a breakfast. Zoey Zapisocki will be on hand to identify wildflowers and grazing species. Lucas Erickson will lead a snake friendly group looking for garter snakes.

The field trip will end at 3:30 p.m. on June 26. Participants are asked to bring their binoculars, hat, sunscreen, camera or phone, insect repellent, and appropriate attire for the weather.

Those interested can join for one or both days. Anyone is welcome and do not have to be an RDRN member.

To confirm attendance, contact the field trip’s host, Judy Boyd, at 403-358-1098.
