Penhold adds two more defibrillators to local inventory

In partnership with Canadian Pacific Rail, and its Rail Has Heart program, the Penhold Fire Department is pleased to see safety increasing in the community.

The CP Has Heart program is funding two more automated external defibrillators (AEDs) in the town, with one at the local RV park, and another at the IGA grocery store.

“Three key things have a positive impact during a sudden cardiac arrest: Calling 911, high-quality CPR, and immediate access and use of an AED,” says Lieutenant Justin Graham.

“Registering the AED with the Alberta Health Services heart-safe site allows 911 dispatchers access to its location to pass that along to those who are calling 911.”

There are now seven AEDs in Penhold for emergency crews to access:

  • The splash park/outdoor rink shack
  • Penhold IGA
  • Penhold and District Library
  • Penhold RV Park
  • Nutrien Ag Solutions
  • The Penhold Multiplex Ice Surface
  • The Penhold Multiplex Viewing Area

According to the Heart & Stroke Foundation, AEDs are a portable and easy-to-use device, that can restart the heart of a person who is in cardiac arrest.

Heart & Stroke recommends taking three steps to help save someone’s life if you know they’re in cardiac arrest:

1) Call 9-1-1 for help and shout to another bystander to get an AED.

2) Start CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation) to keep the blood circulating.

3) Use an AED as soon as one is found to restart the heart.

About 35,000 cardiac arrests, which is not the same as a heart attack, happen in Canada each year, Heart & Stroke says.
